The German government spent 20 million Euro for the development of a smartphones tracing app. It is supposed to help protecting users from Covid patients and help with the uncovering of possible infection patterns. It got accompanied by a grand marketing effort to make sure that as many Germans as possible use the app.
So far, the app has been downloaded 24 million times. But among those disregarding the app is none other than German Chancellor Angela Merkel. During a press conference, she was asked about using the app herself and only gave an evasive answer. Merkel was “willing to use” the app, but didn’t specify if that “will” already had any real consequences.
In difference to Merkel, Interior minister Horst Seehofer, who was also present at the press conference, gave a straight answer. He said that he was using the app regularily, leaving Merkel in a position where she couldn’t give an answer. It looks just like Frau Merkel may have installed the app, but doesn’t use it.
